Preparing the area for new lawn seed is one option. Herbicide is normally used to kill off the old grass and weeds then the ground is prepared by making a fresh seed bed for the new grass seed mix. Drainage and other works having been carried out beforehand if necessary.
Another option is to lay fresh turf or instant lawn as its sometimes called which can transform your lawn quickly without waiting for seed to germinate and tiller over winter to thicken up and cover the bare ground.
